Gina and Ann came in on Sunday for Sandy's free crochet class. They both were wearing their Blue Sky Alpaca tank top that they made in Sandy's "Tank Top" class. It was nice seeing them wear something from a class that they just took. They did such a wonderful job!!!

Jean's Seahorse Sweater

Jean took Sandy's "Tar Heel Sweater" class. The class taught how to make a kid's sweater with the Tar Heel foot on the front and back. However, Jean did not make the sweater with the foot motif. Jean wanted to make her sweater with a seahorse. Her sweater turned out so cute!!! She did such a wonderful job. Way to go Jean for thinking outside the box and make the sweater your own.

Mary's New Knitted Top

Mary came in the other day and showed us the "Short Sleeve Cardigan" she made out of the book, Noro Designer Mini Knits. The yarn she used was Noro Silk Garden.

She did such a great job. It looked great on her. Mary has only been knitting for a short time. Way to go Mary!

The Alpaca Grande Shrug with a Twist and the Anthropologie Capelet

Lynn made the Plymouth Alpaca Grande Shrug that so many have already made. However, Lynn decided not to use the Alpaca Grande, but instead she used Venezia by Cascade Yarns. The Venezia gave the shrug the perfect drape and feel. The yarn is made of 70% merino wool and 30% silk and has a little sheen.

Lynn had some of the Venezia left from making the shrug. Instead of adding the yarn to her stash, she decided to buy a couple more skeins and make the Anthropologie Inspired Capelet .

Way to go Lynn! Two new additions to your wardrobe.

Lazaro Tank Top

Sandy made the Lazaro tank top from the book, Mirasol Collection by Jane Ellison. It is such a cute and stylish tank. It can be worn with another tank underneath or with a short or long sleeve shirt. It can be dressed up or down. It is the perfect tank for any one's wardrobe. The yarn is Hacho from Mirasol which is 100% hand dyed merino wool.

The tank top has been such a big hit, Sandy is teaching a class on it.

The class is on Saturday, May 24th, May 31st & June 7th; 9 am- 10:30am ($35).

Suzan Learns To Tango!

Suzan has only been knitting for a short time. I remember teaching her how to knit. She was very excited to learn and wanted to knit gifts for others.

Sandy made the cutest sweater for my daughter Ava. William is a HUGE Tar Heel fan and was so excited to see his little girl in it. He fowarded her picture to every Tar Heel fan he knew. What Sandy doesn't know is that William is going to ask her to make Ava a new sweater every time she outgrows it. Sandy will be making this sweater until after Ava graduates from UNC. I just hope William will not ask me to make him a sweater.

Sandy used the purple foot graph from Melissa Matthay’s Grape Stompin’ pattern and tailored the foot to look like a Tar Heel. The foot is on the front and back of the sweater. The pattern was sold in a box set titled, Knitting Patterns by Melissa: Volume One-BABIES TO TODDLERS However, her patterns are now sold seperately.

Get to Know One of Our Wonderful Instructors

Many of you may already know Jane Prater. She is very well known in the Charlotte Knitting Community. Prior to Charlotte Yarn, she taught classes at the Sewing Bird. We are very lucky to have her a part of the Charlotte Yarn team. Jane teaches classes and private lessons at the shop. You will also find her working in the shop from time to time helping out.

For those who do know Jane as well, I wanted to give you the opportunity to get to know her.

Jane has been teaching something to someone since before I was born. She has focused obsessively on knitting since the early 1990’s. She has been taught by the best—Melville, Chin, Devine, Neatby, Strick, Bush, Brown-Reinsel, Fisher, New, Saarnit, to name a few. The best class ever was on making the sweater fit and was taught by Rick Mondragon, editor of Knitters. Jane went to Scandinavia with Interweave Knits and to Greece with Knitters. She has completed Level 1 of the The Knitting Guild Association Master Knitter program and is procrastinating with Level 2. Jane’s philosophy of teaching is ripped right out of Elizabeth Zimmerman’s books: Relax, it’s just string!!!

Jane is also currently the President of the Charlotte Knitting Guild.

Romeo has found his Juliet, and it is Stacey

Stacey came by the shop during our anniversary party (for those who were not there, you missed a GREAT party). She was wearing the cutest sweater, called Juliet by Zephyr Style. It looked fantastic on her. It is knit from the top down. Also, because it is knit in either double strand worsted or bulky weight yarn, it knits up quite fast. I love its empire waist.

Ava's Bunny Hat!

I finished Ava's bunny hat last week. It is so cute. I love it!!! The pattern is in the book, Itty-Bitty Hats, by Susan B. Anderson. The yarn I used was the Sublime Kid Mohair. I thought the yarn was perfect for the hat because of the little bit of fuzz.

The hat is really easy to make. If you have never seen the book, you are missing out on the cutest baby hats ever.

Bailey Walks The Runway at Charlotte Yarn

Sherbet Vists Charlotte Yarn

Lothie came in the other day and brought her cute little friend, Sherbet. Sherbet is an angora bunny rabbit and is the softest and fluffiest thing ever.

Lynn is All Ruffled Up

I remember Lynn when she was just making scarves and baby blankents. Now look at her!!! Lynn has moved on and completed her first garment. She did a wonderful job. She even learned how to pick up stitches.

Corey's Three Button Wrap

One of our wonderful customers, Corey, finished the Three Button Wrap. I also made the wrap, but out of Noro Kochoran. However, Corey used the Fleece Artist Scotian Silk. My mouth dropped as soon as I saw it. Her wrap is GORGEOUS!!! I wanted to ask her if we could trade. Although I love my wrap, the Scotian Silk yarn made it look more elegant. The dark brown button that she used looked great with the browns and green tones of the yarn.

Corey said it took her a little more that 1 skein of the Scotian Silk.

Good Job Corey!!!

Gesta Gets Everyone!!!

The Gesta pattern is quickly becoming another favorite at Charlotte Yarn. It all began when Cristi made it. When I saw it, I had to get one for the shop. It only takes 2 skeins of the Noro Kochoran!!!

Jane Adapts The Baby Alpaca Grande Vest

The Baby Alpaca Grande Shrug, has been a big hit at the shop. Ever since we put up a store sample, it seems almost everyone has been making it. The shrug is so cute and easy to make.

However, if you are very blessed in the chest area, the shrug doesn't fit quite right. Jane is one of the blessed ones, but that did not stop her from making it. Jane decided to adapt the pattern to fit her body. She also added a cabled braid in the back. The vest looks fantastic on her.

Anne's Lattice Baby Blanket

Anne finished the Lattice Baby Blanket. The pattern is from Mac and Me. The blanket is made out of Blue Sky Alpaca's Hand Dyed Cotton. The blanket is so beautiful!!!

Anne loves this blanket so much, so is going to make another one using the Blue Sky Organic Cotton.

Longways Is The Way To Go!!!!

Many people think that I scarf can only be knitted by casting on 10-20 stitches. However, you can also knit a scarf longways using a circular needle. Natalie had a scarf at the shop where she casted on about 216 stitches. On every row she changed the yarn. Her whole scarf was in garter stitch (knit every row). She also left a 6" inch tail on each row, which made the scarf self fringing.

A customer loved Natalie's scarf so much that she made her own longways scarf. She used yarns that complemented each other and had various textures. Her scarf turned out fabulous!!! This just proves that you can take several yarns and mix them together to make a unique and wonderful creation.

Who said that a scarf has to be boring!

One of our newest knitters came in the shop last month and wanted to make a scarf for her mother. She selected this beautiful scarf pattern out of the book, KNIT PONCHOS WRAPS & SCARVES by Jane Davis. I just love the way the scarf is braided at the ends. Who said scarves are boring?

The yarn she used was Debbie Bliss Cashmerino Aran which gave it a very soft feel.

Great job!!!

The Charlotte Purls Were In The House!!!

We were very fortunate to have the "Charlotte Purls" hold their last meeting in '07 at Charlotte Yarn. They are such a great group of people.

The Charlotte Purls is a locale knitting group in Charlotte, NC who meet every other Saturday from 2-4PM at Bear Rock Cafe off of Mallard Creek in the University area. If you are looking for a knitting group to join, you definitely have to check them out. Everyone is so nice. They also have a wonderful mixture of knitting skills, from the beginner to the experienced.

Linda's Lovely Skirt

Thanh Nguyen is a locale Charlotte pattern designer. We carry several of her patterns at the shop. One of her patterns is called the "Katherine." The skirt pattern is so cute!!! One of our customers, Linda P, finished knitting the skirt 2 weeks ago. She brought it in so we could see it. The skirt looked great on her. It fit her perfect!!! She is making another one in a cream color.

The pattern calls for 2 skeins of the Peruvian Tweed from Joesph Galler. If you have never touched this yarn, you have to. It is so soft and luxurious. The skirt is made with two strands of yarn held together. If you would like to see Thanh's other patterns, please click here.

Anne Makes a Grand Enterance

Anne S. made this cute shrug. She came in today wearing it. Anne and the shrug made a grand enterance. The shrug looked great on her!!!

The patttern (N026) is from Plymouth Yarn. The yarn is Plymouth's Baby Alpaca Grande. Talk about soft. If you never used or felt this yarn before, you are missing out. The yarn is so soft and nice to work with. The yarn is 100% Baby Alpaca and knits up 3 sts = 1"/US10.5 needle. Many customers are also using this yarn for scarves.

Crafty Girlz's Funky Circle Vest

Janet R. emailed me today to show me the Circle Vest that she made out of the Silk Knits book. The vest is so cool looking. She used the Scotia Silk by Fleece Artist. She used two skeins that had complimentary colorways and decided to knit two rows in each color. In the book, the yarn it called for was Noro Silk Garden. It is great that Janet was able to think outside the box and use another yarn than what the pattern called for. It was also nice to see that she took a chance using the two different colorways. The risk paid off. The vest looks fantastic!!!!!

Another Great Knitting Party!!!

One of great customers, Lynda M., hosted a beginner knitting party at her house last Sunday. It was so much fun!!! Sandy and I taught the class, while Jane P. came along for the fun. Jane was unable to teach due to her recent hand surgery. Jane taught a "Fix Your Issues" knitting party at Lynda's a couple of months ago and had such a good time, she was not about to miss a Lynda party. The food and drinks were GREAT!!! We all had a nice time talking, laughing, and teaching new knitters.

We had 3 new beginners at the party. Two were a mother and daughter. The daughter was 12 years old and was quickly knitting away.

Lisa's Lovely Sursa Shawl

Lisa was very excited to finish the Sursa shawl she was making from the Cornelia Tuttle Hamilton - Book # 2. The shawl is gorgeous and looks lovely on her too! Lisa has been knitting less than a year and is doing wonderfully.

This shawl is a triangle with a very simple reverse stockinette ruffle. It is made with Noro's Silk Garden with a ruffled edge out of Cash Iroha.

The pattern specifies that double yarn is used throughout the entire piece. It moves along rather fast when you are knitting it because it is on Size 15 needles and the yarn double strand.

New Beginner Has Taken Off

WOW is all I can say!!! Dianna learned to knit 3 weeks ago and she has done an amazing job. She started on this scarf and it looks great. My first scarf never looked this good. As I think about, my second, third, or fourth scarf didn't either.

Dianna used several novelty yarns, such as eyelash and ribbons to make this fun a festive scarf. Why buy the perfect accessory when you can knit your own.

Karen has a ball with the Lucy bag

Karen came in last week and showed us the Lucy bag that she made. She made it out of Noro, which self-stripes. A friend saw her bag, so she is now making her one.

The pattern has instructions for a handbag or a shoulder bag when using medium weight yarn, and for an evening bag using sport weight yarn. All versions have clever straps of differing lengths to hold the bag closed.

Finished sizes: Depending on wool choice, gauge and amount of felting: Small bag: 8.5" tall; 17.5" circumfrence. Large bag: 11.5" tall; 24" circumfrence

Sandy Brings Out Her Inner French Girl

Sandy saw the French Girl pattern "Lulu" and knew she had to have it. The bulky yarn made it very quick to make. Since it was very easy and quick, she decided to also make it for family and friends.

Sassy and fun to wear, Lulu takes you from relaxed to elegant with a quick change of accessories. A super project for the advanced beginner who wants to move beyond crocheted scarves. Done up with only 4 balls of Rowan Big Wool and fabricated in one piece. Come by and see Lulu in person.

I Love This Cardigan Harriet Made

Harriet finished the Blue Sky Alpacas Eyelet Cardigan for her daughter Katie. It worked up picture perfect! It fits Katie great and looks fantastic! Harriet made the size small and used 4 skeins of Blue Sky Alpaca Dyed Cotton. The yarn is very comfortable and soft!

Mystery Stole Revealed

This past summer, knitters around the world joined the "Mystery Stole 3" knit-a-long. The Mystery Stole was started by Melanie from Leesburg, VA. Melanie designed a lace stole and released the pattern through a series of clues. Every Friday, she sent out clues until the stole was complete.

The Mystery Stole 3 is now known as "The Swan Lake Stole." BJ stopped by the shop last week to show us her beautiful stole. It is outstanding!!!! She used about 2 1/2 skeins of the Cherry Tree Hill sock yarn. Needless to say, she got her clues right :)

Knitting For Friends

Susan came by yesterday to show us the beautiful wraps she was making for three of her best friends. These women have known each other since high school. Even though they all live in different places, they get together each year to reminisce and have tons of fun. Susan wanted to knit them all the "Loopy and Luscious" from Knitty.com. Susan selected the colors for each wrap based on each person's personality. One friend loves bright colors and is bold and cheery, so she used lime green, bright pinks and yellows. Another friend is very fiery and spunky, so she made hers with various shades of reds and dark plum. Another friend is very warm and nurturing, so she is making hers with tan, brown, and cream tones. What a nice idea to make these for friends. Everyone can always use a pretty wrap.

It's Party Time!!!!

On Saturday, Sandy and I did an Entrelac knitting party!!! We had such a good time. One of our customers, Dawn, put the party together. Dawn thought it would be nice if she and her friends could learn Entrelac together. So Dawn emailed me and said that she wanted to do an Entrelac knitting party. Sandy was excited to do the party since she loves Entrelac. Ironically, Sandy also had an Entrelac hat class earlier that morning.

Sandy and I had a fun time traveling to the party. We only got lost once which was good.

Dawn and five of her friends were at the party. They all did a fantastic job.

A New Batch of Knitters

Jane Prater just finished up her September Beginner Knitting class. The class had 6 students and we are pleased to introduce these newbies to the wonderful world of knitting. Many of them plan to knit Holiday gifts for family and friends.

Which reminds me that I need to get to my Holiday knitting started as well. Can you believe it, 3 more months until Christmas!!!!! Sorry for getting off the subject.

In the class were 2 sets of friends. I think it is great that friends are learning to knit together. The class also had a nice mix of various ages. There are so many things today that separate generations and ages, it is nice to see that knitting is not one of them.

It doesn't have to be cold outside for Arctic Lace

A few months ago, Linda saw the Fishtrap Hat and Scarf that Natalie was making. The hat and scarf are from the book, Arctic Lace: Knitting Projects and Stories Inspired by Alaska's Native Knitters.Linda liked them so much, she also decided to make them. She used the Jojoland Melody yarn for her project. Linda is now all done!!!!! Doesn't she look cute!

The pictures below show the detail of the hat and scarf pattern. The author of the book, Donna Druchunas, made the pattern to resembles native wooden fish traps.

Vogue Scarf Class a Big Hit

Sandy had a class last Wednesday for the scarf on the cover of the Vogue Knitting 25th Anniversary issue. The class was so much fun. Everyone left completing a flower. Shelly is doing her scarf in various greens. Below is a picture of one of her flowers.

Since the class was very popular and many people were unable to take it, we definitely will be offering it again. So stay tuned!!!!

Sandy made a sample of the scarf for the shop. Instead of using the alchemy silk yarns like the pattern used, she opted for the Debbie Bliss Pure Silk and Sirdar Baby Bamboo. She used the Pure Silk for the black and silver flowers and the baby bamboo for the cream. This scarf is perfect for the Holiday season. You can also get creative and do the flowers in different colors like Sandy.

Lynn Isn't Scared of the "Big Bad" Baby Blanket

Lynn came by to showed us another one of her gorgeous baby blankets. For this project, she used the "Big Bad Baby Blanket" pattern from the book, Stitch ‘n’ Bitch. Lynn used the Peter Pan Spot Prints DK yarn in color # 0778: Mini Tartan (pale yellow with red, blue, yellow and green dots) which knitted up beautifully! The blanket has a 4 square design and a seed stitch boarder.

Can you believe, Lynn has only been knitting for less than a year. She has caught the knitting bug and absolutely loves it. She's not alone in her passion; her mother and 10 year old daughter are knitters too. It is always nice to see a family of various generations share in the pleasure of knitting! She huffed and puffed and blew this project away. Great job Lynn!

Cristi Teaches Socks on 2 Circulars

Loretta wanted to learn how to knit socks from the "toe up" on 2 circular needles. Since she has never knitted socks before, Cristi suggested that she first learn to make a regular pair of socks. Cristi and Loretta set-up 3 private lessons, 2 hours each.

Lesson 1: Introduction to the 2 circulars technique for knitting small circumferences. Cast on and toe
Lesson 2: The heel (short row heel techniques and a discussion on reverse heel flap/gussets - homework, knit the cuff)
Lesson 3: Binding off (there are several options for this)

Bulky Baby Asymmetrical Cardigan

Tracy came by to get buttons for the baby sweater that she finished. She said it was a quick knit and incredibly easy. The pattern is for 6-12 months size. It is also written for any gauge yarn. She made the sweater with Noro Blossom.

Lovin The Lizard Ridge Afgahn

Stacey came in the shop on Saturday to show us this beautiful Lizard Ridge Afghan she just finished This was the first one that I have seen completed. I totally fell in love with it as Stacey pulled it out of her bag. Instead of Noro Kureyon like the pattern suggested, she used Noro Silk Garden.

Jojoland Entrelac Shawl

One of our customers, Anne, came in on Saturday to show us the progress of her Jojoland Entrelac Shawl. She is almost finished; she just has to do the trim. The shawl is absolutely gorgeous and Anne is doing a great job! It is knitted in Jojoland's variegated Rhythm yarn which is worsted weight wool. Another customer also made the shawl, and I will say, you have to see this shawl in person. The pictures do not do it justice. (Below is a picture of the shawl on the pattern)

We started carrying Jojoland several months ago and we are so glad that we did. The yarn and its colors are fabulous. We also carry MELODY which is Variegated Fingering Wool and HARMONY which is variegated lace wool. For more information on Jojoland yarn, click here.

Natalie's Vest

Natalie is making a wonderful vest out of Noro Kureyon. I had to take a picture of the vest because it is working up so pretty. The bottom of the vest is done in entrelac. I just love how Noro knits up in entrelac. The colors are just so yummy!!!

Friday and today has been really busy at the shop. We received new shipments of Sublime, Malabrigo, Debbie Bliss, and Louet yarns. We had boxes upon boxes of yarn. It was like Christmas as we tore open the boxes, so excited to see the new yarns. We were really excited about the Sublime yarn. We have never carried it before and couldn't wait to see and feel it. Welcome Home Piper and Family!!!!

Piper is finally back!!!! We missed her so much and couldn't wait for her to get back. For those who don't know why we couldn't wait for her to get back, it is because we knew she was bringing back a beautiful daughter named Hazel. Piper and her husband Chris adopted Hazel a few weeks ago and we are so happy for the blessed family. I was very lucky to see Hazel yesterday and she is such a doll. Since many people have been asking about Hazel and can't wait to see her, we have posted a picture of the family.

Here are a few stats on Hazel. She was born on August 6, 2007 at 10:31am. She was 7lbs 9oz and 20 1/2.

We are very excited that Hazel is here and I know that she will be knitting before she can walk.

David Saves the Day!

David stopped by today to show us the Harry Potter scarf was making. It looked really good. David learned to knit about 4 weeks ago and is having a blast. It is amazing how quickly he has picked knitting up.

It was great seeing David today. While he was in the shop, he picked up some Cascade 220 to make another scarf for a friend. He also fixed our wireless Internet connection!!!!! I was so happy. Many of you know that we rely on the Internet at the shop to look up yarns and patterns. The wireless Internet connection has been not working for at least a week and no one could figure out why. The cable guy couldn't even fix it. Thank goodness David stopped by and was so nice to look at it. Many times our customers thank us for our help, but in this case, Charlotte Yarn owes a HUGE thanks to a wonderful customer.

Cabaret Bag Class a Big Hit

Jane Prater had another fun Cabaret Bag class. There were 5 people in the class. So what is a Cabaret Bag you ask? A Cabaret Bag is a very cute drawstring bag. Most of the bag can be knit on a 16" circular if you wish for speed. It makes a wonderful gift or a quick knit. It is also a great project to use up your scrap yarns and learn about mixing yarns. Jane has taught this class four times. So don't worry if you have missed a past class. We will have many more to come.

If you are a beginner knitter, this class would be perfect for you to learn some new things. It teaches the following:

Cast on and join yarn on a circular needle
Create eyelets for a drawstring strap
Attach new yarns, carry unused yarns, and weave in ends
Use double pointed needles
Close the bottom of any tube to create a bag or hat
Create a twisted cord purse strap

What Kind of Yarn Are You?

I usually do not take online quizzes. However, I thought this one was very cute. It tells you what kind of yarn you are. It told me I was a Shetland Wool. The Shetland Wool description was, "You are a traditional sort who can sometimes be a little on the harsh side. Though you look delicate you are tough as nails and prone to intricacies. Despite your acerbic ways you are widely respected and even revered. " I am not sure I agree with the quiz. I was hoping to be a warm fuzzy mohair or luxurious cashmere. Oh well. Tuesday Night Sit and Knit/Crochet Help Sessions

This past Tuesday, Sandy had her Tuesday Night Sit and Knit/Crochet session. There was three participants. Sandy helped Heather get started on a hat. Heather never worked on double pointed needles before, but was knitting on them like a pro before she left. Katie was getting help on finishing her first vest. Shelia made the cutiest baby socks, but needed help with the kirchner stitch to finish the toes.

Many customers have asked when would our $10 Grab Bags be available again. Natalie was able to make a lot of grab bags yesterday. For those who do not know about our grab bags, they are 3 to 4 yarns put together in a bag. The bags are a GREAT deal. The yarns in the bag are always enough to make a scarf. Many customers get the bags because they are such a good deal and can always find a use for the yarn. Come by and get a grab bag today before they are all gone!

Beginner Knitter Takes Off

Sock Month Has Begun with a Bang

August is sock month at Charlotte Yarn. Today we had our beginners sock class. We had 5 lovely ladies in the class. They all did wonderful!!!! Class was taught by our sock queen, Natalie.

Donna stopped by to ask when the beginners sock class was. When I told her it was taking place now, she was disappointed that she missed it. However, Donna did not stay disappointed for long. She said that she wanted to learn, so I got her started. She never knitted on double pointed needles before, but you would have never known it. She did so good. By the time she left, she turned the heel and did the gusset on a miniature sock.

To help celebrate sock month, we just got in new colors of the Austermann Step sock yarn. Each ball has Aloe Vera and Jojoba Oil making this a fabulously soft sock yarn. This yarn is 75% Virgin Wool and 25% Nylon for both durability and softness. It is a fingering weight yarn with a gauge of 30 stitches per inch when knit on 2.5 to 3mm (U.S. size 1 or 2) needles. It is a Superwash Wool yarn so yarn care is simply machine wash, cool and dry flat.
